  • Sanskrit Name: Vipasha
  • Length: 256 km (2nd largest river after satluj)
  • Origin: beas kund (Near Rohtang pass)→ in Bajaura leaves Kullu→ Enters in Mandi→ from Sandhol enters in Kangra→ leaves kangra in Mirthal→ enter Gurdaspur district of Punjab→ at Harikapattan (Ferozpur district of Punjab)→ it meets with Satluj→ Satluj meets Indus→ indus drains into Arabian Sea.
  • It flows on the boundary of Hamirpur and Kangra for some Kilometers.

Fairs, Festivals and Temples of Hamirpur

1.Gasota Mahadev Temple & Fair:

  • Dedicated to Mahadev (Lord Shiva). 
  • A fair is held on the 1st Monday of ‘Jeshtha’ month (end of May) annually. This fair is held before the monsoon season in the month of May-June. 
  • Located about 10 km from Hamirpur.
  • The fair is known by the name of Gasota cattle fair.
  • Buying and selling of cattle is prevalent.

2. Holi Fair:

  • Started by Raja Sansar Chand at Sujanpur Tira. 
  • Known as an International Fair.
  • National Level Holi Festival Sujanpur.
  • The history of the Holi fair in Sujanpur is approximately 300 years old.
  • The establishment of this city was started in 1761 AD by Raja Ghamand Chand of the Katoch dynasty and the credit for its completion goes to his grandson Raja Sansar Chand.

3. Baba Balak Nath Fair:

  • popularly known as the “Chaitra Mass Mela”
  • The temple is located in Deotsidh
  • The fair is held between May and June.
  • Thousand of people from far and wide come to join the celebration

4. Ghasia Mata Mela:

  • Organized in Ashadha (June-July).
  • Held on the first Tuesday of the month.
  • This fair is dedicated to Goddess Ghasian.
  • Since the time immemorial people believe that on this day fairies come to take bath in the water.

6. Tauni Devi Mandir:

  • fair is held on Navratris.

7. Sair Mela:

  • This fair is held in Ladraon for three days.
  • Maize is worshipped. People wear new clothes.

History of Hamirpur

Hamirpur
  • In 1743, Raja Hamir Chand of the Katoch dynasty of Kangra built a fort at a place which is now known as Hamirpur.     
  • Hamir Chand ruled as the king of Kangra from 1700 to 1747.
  • In 1884, Hamirpur was declared a tehsil office.
Sujanpur Tihra
  • Sujanpur Tihra is located on the banks of the Beas River.
  • In 1748, Raja Abhay Chand built a palace in the hills of Sujanpur, which became popularly known as Tihra.
  • Ghamand Chand developed Sujanpur as a city.
  • In 1761, Ghamand Chand constructed the Chamunda Temple.
  • From 1805 to 1823, Raja Sansar Chand made Sujanpur his capital.
  • 1793- Sansar Chand constructed the Gori Shankar Temple in Sujanpur.

  • 1823- European travelers William Moorcraft and George Trevett (from Germany) traveled to Sujanpur.

  • Bulleh Shah wrote the poem→  “Bulla ki jaana mai kaun” which includes the line:
                                                                                          
                                                                “Aayega Nadaun to jaayega kaun.” (“आएगा नदौन तो जाएगा कौन।”)
  • Bulleh Shah referred to Nadaun as the→  “City of Innocence.”
  • Near Nadaun, there is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva called Bill Kaleshwar Temple.
  • 1823- After the death of Sansar Chand, his son Jodhbir Chand was given Nadaun as a jagir.
                              Jodhbir Chand – 1st ruler of Nadaun
  • During his attack on Mandi in 1792, Sansar Chand captured Raja Ishwar Sen of Mandi and kept him imprisoned in Nadaun for 12 years. Later, the Gorkhas freed Raja Ishwar Sen.
Mehal Moriyan (Bhoranj Tehsile)
  • 1805- Gorkha leader→ Amar Singh Thapa→ defeated Sansar Chand in Mehal Moriya (“महल मोरियां”).
Bhumpal/ Yashpal 1903
  • 1918- He entered in freedom struggle movement.
  • 1932- After the death of Chandrashekhar Azad, Yashpal was appointed as the head of the Hindustani Socialist Republican Army’s commission.

  • Sanskrit Scholar – Panini referred to the Katoch dynasty of Kangra as “Ayudh Jeevi” (warrior community). They were called a fighting species.
